Happy Howl-o-Ween

Happy Howl-O-Ween or Meow-lo-Ween.

We're all out of town today busy partying With Misaki and Mollie and our better halves, like the party animals we are the DJ even played our favourite song Monster Mash.

Cody and Daisy.

Grady and I.

Don't worry Coco was there he was just a bit overwelmed by it all and went camera shy with it being his first big event not like us old timers.

Coco had a great time with him only being small he managed to squeeze into all the mouse holes for a tasty treat his excuse if you catch it yourself you know it's fresh.

Cody and Daisy wandered off into the woods paw in paw and came across a lake brimming with fish so spent most of the night catching fresh trout and salmon.

With everyone out the way Grady and I thought it would be a great time to go table surfing, Grady might be blind but he makes up for it with the nose of a blood hound when it comes to finding food he made a direct hit on the turkey apperantly his human Mum had made the stuffing for the turkey and Grady's developed a bit of a liking for it BOL.

His Mum says naughty Grady I say good on you if humans are stupid crazy enough to leave food lying around we're going to use our initiative and seize the moment BOL.

I don't know what I ate or how much but people are saying are you Coccolino's mini pigs twin, Now I know where the saying pigging out comes from.

Can anyone help Jake get adopted please.

Post reblogged from Meet the Fur -Bombers. Jakes owner passed away yesterday leaving him home alone.

Original request. Okay ya'll, I'm in a bit of a bind I know this isn't really what this board is for but I'm not really in the know for rescues. My next door neighbor passed away yesterday and left his Elder-bull dog Jake behind. We were contacted by his family and asked us to find him a new home since they live out of state. (they live in WV or VA not sure which while we live TN) We are caring for him now, but we know we can't keep him for much longer, our Furbombers are currently at their tolerance limit for new arrivals. Anywho, I have a profile and contact info on a dedicated page for Jake on my blog, I am setting up a profile for him on PetFinder and will be making some phone calls to our local (and maybe not so local) rescues. But I (and Jake) would appreciate any shares you guys could do to help get him re-homed/adopted to a new furrever home. Here is a direct link to his page: www.meetthefurbombers.com/our-neighbor-jake

Thank you for any and all help!

Jake is a sweet and lovable Elder-Bull, about 9 years old. He is very playful and will play ball for as long as you are willing to throw the ball. He loves belly rubs and butt-scratches, he is good with children, and up until recently had a playmate so should be fine sharing attention with one other dog. He has had very little if any interaction with cats, so we are unsure of how cat-friendly he would be. He is used to constant companionship with people both inside and outside, and would probably be happiest with someone who either works from home or has a stay-at-home spouse.

If there isn’t a ball to play fetch with he does take a while to warm up to strangers.

Our knowledge of his medical history if very limited; he is neutered, we believe a year overdue on vaccinations, and heartworm/parasite status is unknown.

Jake has been through a lot of loss this past year, first his ‘Mom’ then his ‘Brother’ and now his ‘Dad’. This poor guy just needs someone to love him.

If you know of any rescues with openings, or potential adopters please email me at victoria.carter@meetthefurbombers.com or call at (615)440-8729. I will update as they occur.

My thanks, and Jake’s too!

  • Has basic housetraining

Likes and dislikes:

Ellie is a very loyal dog who has sadly found herself back in kennels after her owner had a change in circumstances. She is very typical of her breed and has many of the shepherd traits. Once Ellie has a bond with you it is unbreakable, but she can be very worried by people she doesn't know.

Type of home needed:

Ellie is looking for an experienced home, preferably with someone who lives alone and doesn't have many visitors as this does scare Ellie. She will make a wonderful companion to the right owner but they would need to come and get to know her to build her confidence before taking her home. Ellie will need to be the only pet in the home and to live with adults only.

National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

Today is National Pit Bull Awareness Day but the whole month of October has been National Pit Bull Awareness Month and Adopt a Pit Bull Month.

I'm probably not the right person to talk about Pit Bulls seeing as it is illegal to own one in the UK under the Dangerous dogs act but I will try my best.

A list of dogs illegal to own in the UK.

Pit Bull Terrier.
Japanese Tosa.
Fila Brasileiro.
Dogo Argentino.

I found this paragraph on the ASPCA website which has got lots of useful information on Pit Bulls.

Pit bulls were genetically selected for their fighting ability. What does this mean? It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs, that they’re unpredictably aggressive or that they will always fight to the death. These are all common myths about pit bulls. It does mean that they may be easily encouraged to fight with other dogs.

I think that says it all really may be easily encouraged to fight you could probably say the same about other breeds in the wrong hands.

Who encourages them to fight Morons, Idiots definitely not normal human beings, so why should the dogs suffer is it because they haven't got a voice and can't speak up for themselves so the authorities think they're an easy target instead of getting to the root of the problem and going after the gangs or would that mean to much paperwork, it winds me up when healthy, innocent dogs get euthanized through no fault of there own, the next time the vet sticks that needle in the dogs leg they should question themselves and ask the question am I putting the right one to sleep.

I don't know how the authorities determine dangerous, but there have been unconfirmed reports of Pit Bulls licking people to death and stealing there heart BOL

Since I've been blogging I've been fortunate enough to of met some lovely people, and a lot of them own Pit Bulls and can't sing there praises enough for being faithful, loving, caring dogs not once have I heard the words evil, monster, aggressive, out of control mentioned and why not because they've been brought up to love and not fight.

My good friend Ann from Pawsitively Pets has very kindly gave me permission to use her photo of her and her Pit Bull Shiner.

As you can see Ann is really scared of her big scary Pit Bull BOL

Pit Bulls where used during World War 1 Sergeant Stubby (1916 or 1917 – April 4, 1926), was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat. America's first war dog, Stubby served for 18 months and participated in seventeen battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and even once caught a German spy by the seat of his pants, holding him there until American soldiers found him. Back home his exploits were front page news of every major newspaper. Excerpt taken from Wikipedia.

Pit Bulls used to be America’s darlings? Before the mid-80s, stories of pit bull attacks are practically non-existent. There is even some confusion over exactly which breed of dog is a pit bull — the definition includes the American pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire terrier and, at times, the bulldog. This confusion seems to have dogged the breed from the beginning, as there is some disagreement over the origin of pit bulls. Excerpt taken from Cesarsway.

In the 1980s it all went wrong for the Pit Bull before then there where hardly any reports of dog attacks by Pit Bulls until dog fighting made a come back and the Pit Bull was the dog of choice, It is also the preferred guard dog for drug dealers and gangs.

I think it's safe to say BSL ( Breed Specific Legislation ) isn't working and it's time for change, it's time to stand up and be counted and be there voice. There's lots of Pit Bulls in shelters looking for there forever homes and finding it hard because of there reputation and unfortunately not all shelters are no kill shelters with the senior dogs being euthanized to make way for puppies who are easier to re home.

Adopt a pet month (Infographic)

Opt to Adopt and help save a life.

I know it's not possible to rescue every animal and change the world, but to that one pet you save there life will be changed for ever. Rescues are bursting at the seams with unwanted pets and with Christmas fast approaching need all the help we can give them. Even if you're not looking for a pet you can help out by providing any old bedding or old clothes to help keep them warm and comfortable or any old news papers  or even consider a small donation or fostering,

And please consider an older pet who might be overlooked in favour of a puppy, Puppies are usually the first to be adopted and not all shelters are no kill.

Olga And Buster looking for forever homes.

Can anyone help these two find there forever homes please, Olga has been in rescue since 2007 almost half her life and Buster ended up in rescue after escaping from his home and ended up in the pound when his owner was found she didn't want him back.

Olga

Olga is a lovely lurcher who was admitted to Freshfields in 2007.  Olga is a lovely natured dog, she is very affectionate once she gets to know and trust you.  Olga has a number of long term volunteers who take her on long walks which she really enjoys.
Olga could not live with children.  Although she is a nice dog she can still be nervous in certain situations and may bite if she feels threatened.  Care would have to be taken while walking Olga as she is not good with other dogs out on a walk, but she is a very nice dog to walk on the lead in quiet places.
Olga would suit a quiet home with no children.  She enjoys her walks but also loves a nice quiet comfortable place to curl up and have a sleep.
Olga's Update 9/1/13:
Olga is a very straight forward dog who is going to need a home who is as matter of fact as she is.  She knows what she likes and she doesn't like to deviate from her routine.  Olga's favourite pass-time is snoozing on her couch; second to that she adores her walks and as soon as she sees her lead she forgets all her worries and simply squeals with happiness!
Olga sadly is no spring chicken anymore and she struggles with aches and pains in the same way as people do as they get older.  Sadly Olga doesn't like the cold weather, yet she struggles in the heat thus restrcting her summer walks to cooler times of the day.  Olga is a difficult girl to read and she doesn't always like being stroked.  Olga loves company but she is not afraid to tell people off if they have invaded her space when she wants to be left alone!
Olga needs a home who will just let her get on with living her life; she is a simple girl with simple needs and a home who will give her a steady routine and plenty space would be ideal.

Buster was taken to a pound after escaping from his owners' house; when the owner was found she told us she didn't want him back so now poor Buster is looking for a new home.
Buster is a lovely, friendly boy who just wants a friend to keep him safe.  He is a strong dog who will need a home capable of walking him safely on a lead.  Buster was living with another dog and although they squabbled he is ok with most dogs.  Hopefully we will no more about this adoreable chap in time.
Please don't overlook this handsome chap; he has been through a lot and deserves some stablility in his life.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Day and Columbus Day.

Thanksgiving in Canada can be traced back to Martin Frobisher in 1578. He came from England in search of a way to get to the Orient by going north. While he never found the passage, he did establish what later became Newfoundland and Labrador. His celebration of making it all the way from England to his new home became the first Thanksgiving in North America. More settlers joined Frobisher, and as the settlements expanded, people continued to celebrate Thanksgiving. That means the first Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated 43 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth.

Another reason for Canadian Thanksgiving arriving earlier than its American counterpart is that Canada is geographically further north than the United States, causing the Canadian harvest season to arrive earlier than the American harvest season. And since Thanksgiving for Canadians is more about giving thanks for the harvest season than the arrival of pilgrims, it makes sense to celebrate the holiday in October. So what are the differences between Canadian and American Thanksgiving, other than the date? Not much! Both Canadians and Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with parades, family gatherings, pumpkin pie and a whole lot of turkey! Thanksgiving in the United States is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

In the United States Columbus Day is celebrated on the same day as Canadian Thanksgiving.

A U.S. national holiday since 1937, Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. The Italian-born explorer had set sail two months earlier, backed by the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia; instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century.

Later that month, Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China; in December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he though might be Japan. There, he established Spain's first colony in the Americas with 39 of his men. In March 1493, the explorer returned to Spain in triumph, bearing gold, spices and "Indian" captives. He crossed the Atlantic several more times before his death in 1506; by his third journey, he realized that he hadn't reached Asia but instead had stumbled upon a continent previously unknown to Europeans.

Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas, which happened on October 12, 1492, as an official holiday. The landing is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in Latin America, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, as Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity) in Argentina, and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Belize and Uruguay. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various areas since the early 20th century.

All that talk of Thanksgiving turkey flying around being eaten has made Cody, Coco and I hungry so we're going to have this.

More Grumpy Cat Sunday.
